Sirius is a heritage residential redevelopment on Cumberland Street in The Rocks, delivered with architect BVN and builder Richard Crookes Constructions. Completed in 2024, the project required working within an existing heritage structure with stepped levels on every floor, one of the more logistically demanding builds Micos has undertaken. The hero “box” facade uses a repetitive window configuration with bespoke casement windows on substantial hinges, glazed heavy to meet acoustic requirements from the nearby Cahill Expressway. At podium level, numerous bespoke frameless façades complete the building’s varied envelope.

Challenges

Working within a heritage building with stepped levels on every floor made this one of Micos’s most logistically demanding projects. The hero “box” facade needed a repetitive window system built from bespoke casement windows on substantial hinges, glazed heavy to meet the acoustic requirements of the nearby Cahill Expressway. Balconies were attached directly to the existing façade, so coordinating that attachment and maintaining waterproofing consistency was critical throughout.

Strategy

Our strategy was to develop a repetitive window configuration for the hero façade that could be manufactured consistently while still meeting the acoustic demands of the site, using heavy glazing and substantial hinges on each bespoke casement window. Working within the existing heritage structure and its stepped floor levels meant close coordination between the balcony attachments and the façade behind them, with waterproofing consistency treated as a non-negotiable at every junction. The podium’s bespoke frameless facades were managed individually given the variation across the building.

The result was a façade that respected the building’s heritage constraints while meeting modern acoustic and waterproofing standards, across one of Sydney’s most logistically complex sites.
